Jean Monnet Module Sea of Laws
Resolving International Marine Resources Disputes through
Legal Frameworks

Learn how to navigate the legal framework underneath international marine disputes.

Sea of Laws is a Jean Monnet Module project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, aimed at empowering students and professionals to effectively address conflicts involving marine resources through international law framework.

Participants will gain theoretical and practical skills, by combining multidisciplinary lectures with case studies, simulation exercises, peer-to-peer evaluation and collaboratory workshops.

Relevance for European and Global Agenda

Aligning with EU Policies and Agenda

The program aligns closely with several European policies including the EU GREEN DEAL, the Blue Erasmus+ initiative, the EU strategic agenda for 2024-2029, the EU Blue economy, the Horizon Europe Program, the EU Integrated Maritime Policy and several EC directives on sustainability and maritime law.

Supporting the achievement of the SDGs

Through education and training, Sea of Laws actively contributes to achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 16 (strengthening international justice systems) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Enforcing IMO regulations and policies

Sea of Laws supports the implementation of the International Maritime Organization regulations and mission by promoting compliance with key maritime frameworks such as UNCLOS, MARPOL, and the ISPS Code.

Capacity building on UN tools and strategies

Sea of Laws is directly relevant for numerous UN initiatives and legal framework related to underwater resources and maritime law like the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, the UN Fish Stocks Agreement, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and many others.

Enhance Awareness and Capacity on GFCM goals

With a strong focus on maritime law and resource sustainability, Sea of Laws contributes to the objectives of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the FAO) by enhancing legal expertise on fisheries governance, marine conservation policies, and the enforcement of relevant international regulations

Our University
